How to retrieve full text scientific articles?

For retrieving a full text, enter a search by clicking in “search area” in VHL Portal and then follow the steps below:

  • Select the document of interest at the search results page, click on "full text" option. The documents are always presented in full text mode. A password is required to access CAPES or HINARI documents if your IP is not registered.


  • Click on the title of the journal. The Portal of Health Sciences Journals will open. Click on "Electronic Format" to check availability of the journal's online version or which libraries hold this;


  • Click on "Fotocópia" to send the bibliographic record for document copy by a Bireme’ service called SCAD ( This service is charged and requires registration.


  • If you already have a reference document or an article you want, you can directly access SCAD (a Bireme’ service) and make the request.


Is it necessary to be at BIREME to use its services? What are BIREME opening hours?

It is not necessary to go to BIREME to have access VHL . VHL is a virtual library and can be accessed 24 hours a day. BIREME does not offer physical attendance there.

How can I obtain a physical attendance?

UNIFESP Central Library performs a physical attendance from Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 8 pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. It is also possible to obtain help by phone: (+55 011) 5539-6312 / 5576-4562.

Do I have to register myself to access VHL?

VHL access is free and it is not necessary to register. If you want a full-text documentthat is not available online you need to register at a Bireme service called SCAD (copy service of documents). This is the only charged service and demands registration to request document copies.

Is it possible to obtain medical advice through VHL services?

VHL aims to provide access to technical and scientific information. So, it does not offer medical advice to users. For counseling on diagnosis, therapy or procedures, we suggest that you consult a specialist to answer your questions.

You can get general health information on Medline Plus (, both in English and Spanish. Remember that any information from internet or other source does not replace an appointment with a physician.

Does BIREME service offer bibliographic search or search by demand?

Currently in BIREME we do not offer bibliographic search, but we can guide you by e-mail to use searching resources offered for free at VHL. For bibliographic search, BIREME suggests a local contact in the nearest specialized library in the area of your interest.

Does BIREME offer article translation service ?

No, BIREME doesn’t offer this service.

What are the advantages of using VHL to access the MEDLINE database?

The advantage of accessing MEDLINE via VHL search is the ability to retrieve scientific articles using search terms in Portuguese or Spanish.

If I write a search term in Portuguese, will it result only in articles in Portuguese?

No. The search is done on various document fields (title, abstract, subject descriptor) and it can retrieve text in any other language besides Portuguese.

Must the search in MEDLINE via VHL be in English?

Most of MEDLINE documents are in English. If you are searching for meaningful words, the resultwill be more efficient if you write the words in English. But, if you are searching by subject descriptors, you can write them in Portuguese, Spanish or English that the result will show articles published in several languages, including English.

Can I export the search result?

After doing a search, check the page of results for the bullet “Send results”. Select the references of interest and choose how you want to send them:

  • by e-mail
  • by print form
  • Export citations in RIS format (for Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote, etc)

How can I search on Virtual Health Library (VHL)?

On VHL Search Portal page, within the search box type significant words about the specific subject of interest that represents the goal.

If necessary, truncate the word with $ (dollar sign) to retrieve derived words.

For example: educ$ retrieves - education, educate, educación etc.

  • Click "Search"

On search results page, use the filters on the left of the page to refine your search. The available filters are: publication type, clinical aspect, full text, subject, language, year of publication etc.


  • A sensible research is one that retrieves a large number of documents.
  • A survey specifies is one that retrieves a low number of documents.

If you want to make your search more sensitive use few meaningful words in your search strategy and click search. And to make your search more specific add more words and / or terms on its search strategy, check for spelling errors, use the truncation sign, make use of synonyms. If you still have doubts, go to the "Tutorial", which is available at the top of the results page.

  • Selecione "permutado" e clique em "índice";
  • Digite somente uma palavra do assunto ou parte da palavra e clique em "índice";
  • Aparecerá uma lista, selecione o assunto desejado e clique em "mostrar" para ver o descritor oficial.

A BIREME não tem fins lucrativos e uma de suas políticas é a não vinculação a instituições comerciais.

Divulgação de eventos

Para inscrever um evento, na primeira página da BVS clique em "Diretório de eventos". Depois clique em "Indicação de Evento", na parte superior direita. Sua indicação será avaliada e, se aprovada, publicada no diretório.


É permitido colocar o link da BVS em seu site. Porém, solicitamos que disponibilize apenas o link da página inicial da BVS ou de uma fonte de informação geral, sem destacar páginas isoladas do contexto.

Para inscrever seu site, na primeira página da BVS clique em "LIS- Localizador de Informação em Saúde" e preencha o formulário "sugira um site", na parte inferior direita. O site será avaliado e, caso aprovado, ficará disponível no LIS.

Na BVS, você pode ter acesso a periódicos gratuitos acessando:

  • O Portal de Revistas Científicas ( ). No portal, clique em "Pesquisa Avançada" e selecione a opção Texto Eletrônico "Disponível e Gratuito".
  • A SciELO ( ), que disponibiliza o acesso a textos completos de periódicos de várias áreas do conhecimento;

Pesquisa por vídeos, imagens, sites

Acesse o catálogo de sites Localizador de Infornação em Saúde LIS - é o portal da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde que contém o catálogo de fontes de informação em saúde disponíveis na Internet e selecionadas segundo critérios de qualidade. Descreve o conteúdo destas fontes e oferece links para as mesmas na Internet.
